Orkney

The Orkney islands off the north coast of Scotland have some of the best preserved stone age remains in Europe, as well as the remarkable sea stack known as the Old Man of Hoy. St Magnus Cathedral in the main town, Kirkwall, was built in the 12th and 13th centuries when the islands belonged to Norway. A major restoration was undertaken in the early 20th century funded by a bequest from my great grand uncle, George Thoms, who was Sheriff of Caithness, Orkney and Zetland in Victorian times.
